Meet Our Tenants – Geoff Capes

Geoff is a business owner in Broadstone Mill. His business specialises in teaching driving skills to new drivers.

Hi, Geoff. Tell us about your business.

I run a local driving school Geoff Capes Driving School. We have been established for 23 years teaching the people of Stockport and surrounding areas to drive. We currently have 7 driving instructors and my aim for this year is to recruit another 5 by the year end.

What attracted a company like yours to Broadstone Mill?

I had reached the point in my business where it was outgrowing my house so I investigated moving to a office space and by far Broadstone mill ticked all of my boxes. It has led to my business looking more professional where I can interview people in an office environment and also the added bonus of the use of the meeting room.

Has being within the communal space helped with any business challenges?

I think it has made my business stand out and be more professional.

What’s your favourite thing / hidden gem from the local area?

I would say my church St Elisabeth’s.

Meet Our Tenants – Flanderz Tattoo

Emma is a business owner and one of the tenants at Broadstone Mill. Her business, Flanderz Tattoo, specialises in creating beautiful tattoos for her clients.

We met up with Emma to find out about her business, and her experiences in the mill.

Flanderz Tattoo Studio Broadstone Mill .      Image of Flanderz Tattoo Studio Broadstone Mill

Hi, Emma. Tell us about your business.

I started tattooing in 2015 with the goal of opening up a private space where people who wouldn’t normally feel comfortable going into a typical tattoo studio could come! I want to make a safe LGBTQi+ tattoo studio that feels welcoming and break the stereotype that being heavily tattooed is a masculine thing instead of a way to express yourself and feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin. Thanks to Broadstone Mill I’ve been able to open my own little studio and start my dream!

What attracted a company like yours to Broadstone Mill?

The flexibility is amazing, I can end up working on a tattoo into the late night so this place is perfect, also the transport links and free parking for me and my customers is great. I wouldn’t have been able to afford to open my own studio in a high street shop without drastically upping my prices so it was perfect when I found here, it’s more space than I even need and I can keep my prices cheap!

Has being within the communal space helped with any business challenges?

At first I was wary of the communal aspect of the Mill but now I love it! I never get any judgement from other tenants towards me or my customers just support and love! Because I work by myself it can get quite lonely so it’s really nice when another tenants pops in to see what tattoos I’ve been doing or when I run out of printer ink there’s always someone to help you.

What benefits do you get having your business based in a non-city centre location?

Obviously the main one is the free parking and it’s a lot cheaper! I also found it a lot easier for my customers, as they come from all over the country it’s a lot easier for them to get off the train at Stockport than faff around in the city centre and if they’re driving it’s just off the ring road.

What’s your favourite thing / hidden gem from the local area?

Brinnington park is my favourite place in the area, if I’m every stuck for inspiration I go walking and look at the flowers or sit and paint birds.

We have a range of tenants in the mill, ranging from IT support to podiatrists, to builders, to clothing exporters. Are there any other types of businesses you’d like to see in the space?

I would like to see more creative businesses open, it’s such an amazing space that took quite a bit of searching to find and I think it would be great to see it become more of a creative hub for individuals who want to get out on their own and work for themselves.

Meet our tenants – Computeam

Owen Napier – MD – Computeam

Owen Napier is a business owner in Broadstone Mill. His business provides managed IT services to education, public sector organisations and SMEs across the country.  We met up with Owen to find out about his business, and his experiences in the mill.

Hi, Owen. Tell us about your business.

Computeam has been around since 1998, providing technology solutions and support to a range of organisations including schools and SMEs across the North-West. Our goal is to improve your outcomes using technology and we use a wide range of tools to do this, from helping companies to make use of cloud-based communication tools to providing fast, secure internet services.

The biggest asset in our service-led organisation is our staff and we currently employ over 50 people across our three bases in Stockport, Liverpool and Taunton.

What attracted a company like yours to Broadstone Mill?

The Mill provided a flexible business space that was ideal for us from the start. The free onsite parking allowed our large field-based team to return to the office for meetings, and proximity to the M60, M56 and M6 were also key factors. Over the years we’ve grown and have been able to take on additional space to suit our needs, including flexible storage space and project space to help deal with seasonal peaks in our project work.

Has being within the communal space helped with any business challenges?

Definitely. The support of the Mill in providing flexible space for our summer “peak” has really helped and over the years we’ve used the services of a number of fellow tenants.

What benefits do you get having your business based in a non-city centre location?

The transport links are excellent and we don’t suffer from the traffic constraints that would hit us being in the city-centre. Of course the costs are much lower too!

What’s your favourite thing / hidden gem from the local area?

There’s an amazing Sicilian restaurant called A Tavola just up the road in Reddish, and in my opinion the best brunch in Manchester can be had just 5 minutes away from Broadstone Mill at Trove in Longsight.

We have a range of tenants in the mill, ranging from IT support to podiatrists, to builders, to clothing exporters. Are there any other types of businesses you’d like to see in the space?

It would be great to see some professional services organisations – a few years ago there were a firm of solicitors who are always handy neighbours to have!
